Calling all nurses

A recent report on the level of understanding about M.E. among nurses (see InterAction 68, p 12), prompted the Forward ME Group, Chaired by the Countess of Mar, to invite Dianne Burns, who sits on the steering group of the RCN Education Forum, to attend one of their meetings.

Hearing the Group’s concerns about the knowledge and education of nurses in relation to the needs of patients, Dianne, a Lecturer in Community Nursing at the University of Manchester, has pledged to find out more about what is happening at coal face level.

She hopes to determine how the RCN can help to raise awareness of issues faced by people with the illness and how they might help improve knowledge levels and education of nurses.

Dianne is liaising with contacts in other RCN Forums including: Practice Nurse Association, Nurse Practitioner Association, Children and Young People forums, Defence Nursing, District Nursing, Mental Health, Community Rehabilitation, Women's Health Forum, Neuroscience Forum, Palliative Care, Pain and Complementary Therapy Rheumatology Nurses, on the topic and setting up a database of nurses with special interest in M.E. and CFS.

The ideas generated so far include: a national conference, local and regional study days/roadshows/workshops (interprofessional and nurse specific), EMIS templates for use in GP surgeries, informative or educational CD-ROMs, on-line educational packages/toolkits for nurses, targeting specific professional journals with clinical and educational articles and interprofessional study days.
