How to start a group
Action for M.E. can provide you with an information pack on how to start a local support group, but here are a few guidelines to bear in mind:
- Initially, groups are small and their main purpose is to provide support, advice and friendship to their members.
- As the group grows you might want to consider broadening the role and raising awareness of M.E. locally; campaigning for services; providing a newsletter for members and fundraising.
- Groups do a lot, so if members are willing and able it's best to share out the jobs. This way, it doesn't always fall to one person to do everything and other, able members contribute to the group's activities.
- Encourage members' family and friends to belong to the group. They often have valuable skills and much more energy than people with M.E. and can really help the group to grow.
- Individual group members can support their own local campaigns and Action for M.E.'s national campaigns. Encourage members to write to the letters page in the local newspaper or feature on local radio or television to raise awareness; join patient panels; local voluntary sector networks etc.
Action for M.E. has a team of people to support you and your group, giving advice on setting up, working with the local media, fundraising, and campaigning for services.

Becoming a registered charity
Most support groups do not start out as registered charities but as the group grows it is advisable to review the aims of the group and consider its charitable status. Further information and advice on registering as a charity is available from The Charity Commission on 0870 333 0123, or visit www.charitycommission.gov.uk.
